In conversation with Syed Ali as he talks about his latest Punjabi Folk remake ‘Nit Khair Manga’

Syed Zubair Ali aka Syed Ali, our artist for today started his career in the music industry by doing gigs for jazz bands and producers. Born and based in Norway, the artist joined the Oslo School of Music and Arts when he was 16 years old to learn Indian Classical music. Inspired by some of the giants of the Indian music industry like Muhammad Rafi, Lata Mangeshkar, and Kishore Kumar, Ali started singing at a very young age and has not stopped since. Some of his other influences include Sonu Nigam, Udit Narayan, and Kumar Sanu with Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan being his favorite.

The artist loves mixing elements of Indian and modern pop music and released his first single ‘Hum Tere Dewane’ in 2018 with Morgan Kornmo, his producer. He is also working on a project called ‘Jahan Mera’ supported by the Art Council of Norway. So far, the singer has released six songs in the project, which received well. The 40-year-old artist, while talking to us, said “My intention is to not limit myself to one particular style of singing or genre, so I do experiment and have a very open attitude when making songs.”

‘Nit Khair Manga,’ Ali’s latest song is a remake of the original song by Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. The Punjabi folk song was released on the 10th of December and is a fusion between modern sounds and the Qawwali style of singing. It also uses live instruments like the Afghan Rubab and the tabla. Ali describes the track as a sincere attempt to keep the original style intact on top of the pop music throughout the track.

Some of the artist’s other releases over the past couple of months include ‘Chandni Raton Mein,’ ‘Tu Mera Jahan’ with Gunjan Singh, ‘ Raaja & Raani’ featuring Ritu Rawat, and ‘Door Na Jana’ produced by the UK producer Bonnie Marwa.

All these songs took over a year to record. The brilliant artwork was done by the Norwegian design company called Contrasto. The tracks were recorded in Ali’s studio based in Oslo.

The urban Indian pop musician is working on more songs with new artists in 2023. Watch out for this amazing artist!
